5 Ways To Make Italian Style Iced Coffee at Home

Perfect for summertime

Coffee lovers know there are hundreds of varieties of their favorite drink. Some are better suited to the warm weather in the summer months when you want a cool refreshing pick-me-up. Iced coffee is faster to prepare than cold brew coffee and offers the perfect alternative to drinks like iced tea or other beverages when you want to mix things up during the summer months.

For the most basic version of iced coffee, you prepare your favorite variety of coffee and pour over ice to enjoy. For drinking brewed coffee this way, we like to use a low acid variety but anything KoffiePiraat offers can work, depending upon your preferences.

1) Caffé in Ghiaccio

Typically, a Caffé in Ghiaccio is an Italian drink from Salento. Although the recipe is simple, the outcome depends upon the steps. The order of things influences the taste of your iced coffee.

  1. First, put hot espresso in a glass and add sugar immediately. How much sugar depends upon your taste.
  2. Next, grab another glass and fill it with ice cubes. It is essential that you remove the ice from the freezer just before using them. Don’t let them sit out as they should be as dry as possible otherwise, you will water down your coffee too much.
  3. Immediately pour the sugared espresso mixture into the glass with the ice cubes and drink immediately.
  4. An additional step is optional. Try stirring the ice around to cool the sugared espresso and then pour it back into the first glass while straining the ice. If you elect this option, you’ll have a fresh espresso at close to full strength. By experimenting with the time your ice is cooling the warm drink, you’ll find the preparation that best suits your taste.

2) Caffe Ieccese

Keeping to the Italian region of Salento, the Caffé leccese was also invented in this area. This drink swaps out the sugar and replaces it with almond milk.

  1. >First, put hot espresso in a glass and add cold almond milk. How much depends upon your taste.
  2. Next, grab another glass and fill it with ice cubes. It is essential that you remove the ice from the freezer just before using them. Don’t let them sit out as they should be as dry as possible. Otherwise, you will water down your coffee too much.
  3. Immediately pour the milky espresso mixture into the glass with the ice cubes.
  4. After that, stir well and wait a few seconds for the drink to cool down.
  5. Then transfer the mixture into the first glass to enjoy.

3) Espressino Freddo

This is a cold take on an Espresso Freddo which is also known as a Cremates di caffé. Like the hot version, this drink is prepared with a lot of whipped cream and sugar.

  1. First, prepare hot espresso and allow it to cool.
  2. Next, grab another glass and fill it with whipped cream.
  3. Add the cooled espresso while stirring
  4. Stir in some sugar to taste.
  5. Continue to stir until mixture almost becomes a mousse that you have to spoon. A milk frothing wand or wand mixer can help speed up this process.
  6. Store in the refrigerator until you’re ready to serve and enjoy.

4) Caramel Iced Coffee

This version relies on the addition of flavored syrup. We love the Monin brand syrups and stock a range of flavors. You can experiment with different syrups to further customize your coffee.

  1. First, prepare a double hot espresso and let it cool in the fridge.
  2. Mix 7-8 Ice cubes in a blender with a generous dash of milk
  3. Add two scoops of ice cream and blend
  4. Finally, add the cold coffee with three tablespoons of Monin Caramel Syrup and blend
  5. Enjoy in a tall glass with a dash of whipped cream

5) Iced Cappuccino

Cold coffee is often bitter. This is especially true with a cappuccino. For a basic version, just add ice to your warm drink. To take things up a notch, try these simple steps:

  1. Prepare the cappuccino as usual and do not let the coffee cool.
  2. Beat whipped cream with sugar and set aside
  3. In a shaker, add the hot coffee with cold milk, cane sugar (or sweetener of your choice) and ice cubes
  4. Shake until the beverage is cold - usually takes about a minute or so.
  5. Pour contents pinot a glass and finish with the sweetened whipped cream.
  6. Enjoy with a sprinkle of cocoa powder for an extra treat.

6) Bonus Treat: Affogato

While it’s technically not an iced coffee, an Affogato is perfect for the warm weather.

  1. Prepare a strong shot of espresso. It is vital that the espresso is extra strong
  2. Pour the espresso over 1 - 2 scoops of vanilla ice cream
  3. Enjoy as is or add a splash of your favorite liqueur. We like using Bailey’s or Amaretto
