In the spotlight: Caffé Mauro

Taste excellence in Caffé Mauro's coffee

Do you fancy a strong cup of coffee for breakfast? Then Caffé Mauro is the coffee for you. The Italian coffee brand is known for its strong coffee with a spicy character. The universal taste provides a real kick. So you can learn more about them, KoffiePiraat puts Caffé Mauro in the spotlight.

Sailing to adventure

The Caffé Mauro story begins with Demetrio Mauro, a young lad who spent ten years working on a ship while saving his money and dreaming of starting his own business. In 1930, he was able to make that dream a reality when he bought a ship of his own called Salvatore Padre. He moved to Africa to start a travel agency in the Italian colonies. That business was lost, however, due to the Second World War and he had to begin again.

A new adventure

In 1946, Demetrio began roasting coffee but soon wanted to return to his birthplace, Calabria, Italia. In 1949 he did just that and founded Caffé Mauro as a small roaster with a capacity of 20 kg. The small capacity hampered the fledgling company’s growth. In 1958, Demetrio moved to a new factory and within two years, he was so successful that he had to expand yet again. Today, the Caffé Mauro roasting facility is the largest coffee production plant in Europe.

Global Sourcing

Demetrio’s passion for sailing the high seas and traveling the world continues in the way that Caffé Mauro sources its coffee. The company makes quality blends of coffee beans from Brazil, Africa, Central America, and Asia, among others. You can taste this diversity in the unique flavors that Caffé Mauro coffee offers.

The company is very focused on quality coffee and the processes that ensure their high standards. This is reflected in the various certificates and awards the company has received. In 2012, Caffé Mauro received the IFS International and the BRC certificate. These are the highest certificates available in the European coffee market and a true mark of excellence for the company.

High Volume, High Quality

Since 1997, the entire output of Caffé Mauro has been centered around Villa San Giovanni, just outside of Demetrio’s hometown of Calabria. Their facilities cover an area of 35,000 m2. It is considered one of the most modern production facilities in Europe. The high volume of production still involves a lot of focus and dedication to maintain a consistently good coffee. A team of experts tastes around 10,000 cups of coffee each year just to test the quality of green coffee beans. And the green beans are just the beginning of the roasting process.

Imperfect coffee beans are removed at each stage of the roasting process to ensure the company’s high standards are maintained. Caffé Mauro roasts their beans very slowly before cooling them in a precise manner which is one of the company’s secrets to their success. Every batch is then analyzed for character and features that meet the company’s criteria for each blend. Then the beans are bagged or ground and packaged, ready for you to enjoy.
