Like many Italian coffee roasters, Caffé Vergnano remains a family-run business. The company was founded in 1882 and is currently managed by the fourth generation of the Vergnano family. They now sell their products in more than 80 countries.
The coffee company’s story begins in a pharmacy in Chieri, Italy. Domenico Vergnano was busy making coffee in his spare time. After a few years, he mastered the art of roasting, blending and selling coffee. His products were so popular that he soon expanded to three warehouses, with one in Chieri, Alba and Turin.
Building on this initial success, the family guided the company through many years of stable growth until 1930 when they decided to take the entire production process into their own hands. At the time, they took the very daring step of purchasing a coffee plantation in Kenya. Because of this, the company is able to manage every step of their production process, thus ensuring a level of quality control that few can match.
Roasting coffee beans affects the intensity of taste, flavor, and aroma that comes from each cup of coffee. Each Caffè Vergnano coffee variety is roasted separately for a unique flavor profile. All variants of beans are roasted slowly at lower temperatures in batch cycles of 20 minutes. The batches are then inspected separately before the beans are blended to maintain the flavor quality. This ensures a consistent taste unique to each coffee variety.
Caffé Vergnano adheres to tradition while remaining open to innovation. The company understands the impact their products and operations have on the environment. To address environmental concerns, the company introduced biodegradable capsules to reduce waste with a fully compostable product.
