Keeping your coffee beans fresh at home

There is nothing better than coffee made from your favorite, freshly ground coffee beans. A package of coffee beans can be kept for about six months after opening the package. However, the flavor of the beans deteriorates immediately after opening the package because the beans come into contact with air (oxygen), moisture and light. You don't want the flavor of your coffee to deteriorate.

How do you make sure that the last coffee beans in the pack taste just as good as the first ones when you first opened the pack? With these personal tips and tricks from the Coffee Pirate, you can keep your coffee beans fresh.

The packaged fresh coffee beans at home

The package of coffee beans that you receive at home is equipped with a valve. Coffee beans are always packaged by the coffee roaster as soon as possible after roasting. Because the coffee beans are packaged so soon after roasting, the roasting process always continues to work a little in the beans. The valve ensures that gases can still escape, but that no oxygen can enter. If you did not provide the package with a valve to allow the gases to escape, there is a good chance that the package would burst under the pressure of the built-up gases.

After opening the package

As soon as you open the packaging, light, air and moisture come into contact with your beans. Many people take some beans out of the package and then crumple the package closed again. We advise you not to store the beans in the package if you want to keep the taste of the coffee beans as optimal as possible. It is very difficult to keep the package airtight.

What is the best way to store coffee beans?

The coffee beans should be stored in such a way that they are exposed to as little air (oxygen), light and moisture as possible.

Dark and moisture free

Light and moisture are the easiest to solve. Put the beans away in a dark place or in a non-transparent tin. Do not store the coffee beans in the refrigerator or in a cellar because these are damp places.

Airtight

Making your packaging airtight is a bit more difficult, but we have a few tips that will help you:

  • Store the beans in preserving jars - which you then put in a dark place
  • Place a plastic wrap under the lid of the can to prevent air from entering through the cracks
  • Use a special vacuum sealer device that allows you to vacuum pack food products.
  • Or use special plastic bags that you can vacuum seal by, for example, sucking out the air with a straw.

Divide into several portions

Another handy thing is to pack your coffee beans in smaller portions. Then the portions you have put away will not suffer from opening and closing the coffee can or other packaging.

In short

Your coffee beans will keep for at least 6 months after opening. Keeping your coffee beans fresh is mainly a matter of storing them correctly. We hope that the above tips have helped you on your way so that you can enjoy your own freshly ground coffee every day.
