Talking to Kerry about Yoga
Turning your passion into your job is something Kerry has done as well. His passion is not only photography, but also yoga. He has been doing it for years and it is one of his (almost) daily activities. Yoga is not only fun to do, but it also has a very positive effect on your mental and physical health. Kerry tells us all about it.
How it started
Kerry has done a lot in his life, such as karate, boxing and fitness. When he first started with Yoga in 1997, he immediately felt different, in a positive way. He got more energy and a peace in his body and mind. Since then he started teaching yoga to interested people. In addition to being a yoga teacher, Kerry is also a photographer. When the pandemic broke out, he had fewer photography jobs. This was a great opportunity for him to give more (online) yoga classes.
Iyengar yoga
The type of yoga that Kerry practices and teaches is an Iyengar Yoga method. This yoga method was developed by yoga teacher BKS Iyengar. BKS Iyengar is considered one of the most important yoga teachers in the world. The emphasis in Iyengar yoga is on precision, alignment of postures and holding the poses for a long time.
The Health of Yoga
Kerry does yoga almost every day. He also meditates and this together is good for body, breathing and mind. “Yoga is good for everyone”, says Kerry. “It’s just that not everyone is interested in it, but it would do everyone good”. Yoga helps you to get more strength and flexibility in your body. You get stronger and more flexible muscles. Yoga is also very good for your joints, especially those in your arms, legs and spine. If all these things work well, you get sick less quickly and you recover faster from, for example, aches and pains. You have to know how your body works to get the best out of it. “If you never look under the hood of your car, you don’t really know how it works”, says Kerry. “The same goes for your body”. In addition, you always feel better after a yoga session.
Yoga for everyone
Some people think that yoga is not for them, because they are stiff or not flexible. According to Kerry, this is all the more reason to practice yoga. The same applies if you are ill or overweight, for example. Yoga will only bring you positive things. But you should not only be interested in being healthy, but also in self-development. It is also not only about what you feel in the yoga class itself, but especially about how you feel afterwards. And you can only achieve this effect if you also practice yoga regularly.
Challenges and rewards
The biggest challenge for Kerry as a yoga teacher was that his students were lax in coming to his classes. “I put a lot of energy and time into my classes and if I don’t get much in return, that’s quite a challenge”. However, there are many people who come back often, which is a great reward. In addition, your well-being and feeling healthy is also a great reward. The world is sometimes upside down and we are constantly online. According to Kerry, stepping out of that world for 1.5 hours is an amazing experience.
