Did you know that you can show yourself from your greenest side today? It can start with a cup of coffee. These are the tips from KoffiePiraat to enjoy your cup of coffee sustainably.

Where does my coffee come from?

Consciously choose the location of your coffee. The quality mark of your coffee indicates how sustainable the product is. For example, Fairtrade helps smaller coffee farmers to optimize production and they apply non-negotiable price standards. In this way, small coffee farmers can remain independent. A good alternative is the UTZ quality mark. This mark focuses on good working conditions for employees and the fact that farmers use fewer pesticides on crops. In the meantime, UTZ Certified is the largest quality mark in the field of coffee. These are just two examples of sustainable coffee.

Be prepared and recycle

It sounds logical but it still happens too little. Always make sure you are prepared when you go out. Consider taking a reusable mug/cup with you. This way you do not throw away a paper cup and also fewer plastic lids are made. In addition, it can also be good for your wallet. Large companies around the world are increasingly offering discounts if customers bring reusable cups. In the Netherlands you can do this at Starbucks , among others. They give discounts to encourage customers to bring their own reusable products.

In addition to cups, you can also pay attention to other plastic products. For example, don't take a plastic straw with your iced coffee, but just drink from the glass. Of course, you can also buy and bring your own reusable, iron straw.

Reuse your coffee grounds

You don’t have to throw away your coffee grounds right away! You can use the grounds for other purposes. Did you know, for example, that coffee grounds can be used as fertilizer? If you mix the coffee grounds with your compost, extra nitrogen is added to the material. This ensures better distribution of the water and aeration of the soil, among other things. Coffee grounds can also be used to absorb unpleasant odors or as an eco-friendly way to remove grease from pans. The possibilities are endless with your coffee grounds.

Coffee with as little electricity as possible

Nowadays, you can use a large appliance to make good coffee, or you can do it yourself with a few small tools. For example, you can think of a Chemex or a French Press. The great thing about these appliances is that you don't need electricity. This way you save on costs and you also help nature. In addition, you can take these small appliances with you everywhere. This way you can enjoy the same coffee on location as at home.

Do you prefer to use a device? That is of course no problem. Please note that you switch the machine off completely after use. Standby mode still uses power. You may have to wait a little longer for your cup of coffee, but it is definitely worth it.

Don't make more than necessary

How often has it happened that you have to throw away coffee. Eventually you don't have enough time or you are so busy that the coffee has become cold in the meantime. You can throw the pot away again. This is not only a waste of your coffee but also for the environment. Be aware of the number of cups you make. You can always make more.
