Venice for the coffee lover

Venice: an iconic city that everyone has heard of. Even if you haven't been there yourself, you're probably familiar with its canals, gondolas and unparalleled streetscape. But did you know that Venice is also a great city if you love coffee? Here are KoffiePiraat's 5 reasons why a trip to Venice is definitely worth it:

1. The rich history of coffee.

Coffee is in the blood of the Venetians, and we mean that almost literally! The Venetians are responsible for introducing coffee to Europe. The first document that mentions coffee dates back to 1585. So coffee has been consumed there for almost 500 years! The Venetian traders came into contact with coffee during their travels in the 16th century. They imported the coffee beans from the Middle East to Venice. In the beginning, however, this was not appreciated. Christian Italy wanted nothing to do with a drink that came from the Islamic East. Fortunately, Pope Clement VIII was there: after he drank this 'pagan' drink and fell in love, he suggested that it would be a sin to banish the heavenly coffee. After coffee was approved by Pope Clement VIII, coffee became an indispensable part of Venice.

2. A cafe on every corner

Coffee in Venice became so popular that around 1683 the first 'Café' opened in Piazza San Marco. This was just the beginning and after that cafés popped up everywhere. In a Café you could do more than just drink coffee. Here people of all classes - aristocrats, professors, students, merchants and 'ordinary citizens' - came together to talk, eat and drink in a comfortable atmosphere. Cafés quickly became an important concept in Venetian culture and this is still noticeable today. With the overwhelming choice of cafés, Venice is still the place to drink coffee in the morning, afternoon, evening and in between with friends, family, strangers or alone.

3. Drinking coffee while standing

We have to admit that Venice is not the cheapest destination for a city trip. Luckily, the Venetians have a solution for that: standing, at the bar, drinking coffee. This is not only cheaper (because you don't pay service charges) but also gives you the chance to chat with your barista! Baristas in Venice are proud of their job and are happy to give you tips about coffee or the city. And who knows: you might walk away with a new, lifelong friendship.

4. Caffè Del Doge is sold in 120 establishments

If you are in Venice, you really have to try coffee from Caffè Del Doge. Their own café, near the Rialto Bridge, is considered one of the best coffee places in Venice - by tourists and Venetians alike - and on Tripadvisor this café is in the top 5! In addition, Caffè Del Doge coffee is also served in 120 other places. So you can enjoy one of our favorite coffee brands in many places in Venice.

5. Coffee with a view

Italians know how to create atmosphere in a building and Venetians are no exception. Every café you enter - no matter how budget or luxurious - is almost overflowing with authentic atmosphere. And we haven't even mentioned the terraces! It's true that it may cost a little extra to sit on a terrace, but when you're sipping your coffee next to the Grand Canal and looking out over the gondolas, it's definitely worth it!
