How to make your own Pumpkin Spice Latte

This coffee drink has quickly become a favorite for fall and winter, having blown over from America. Some people like it so much that they drink it all year round. And why not?!

The Pumpkin Spice Latte is served at many coffee shops during the colder days of the year, but when it's so chilly outside you might want to stay inside. Plus, making it yourself saves you money too.

Below we explain how you can easily make the Pumpkin Spice Latte at home with a recipe from KoffiePiraat.

Ingredients for 1 person.

1 - 2 cups of espresso

1 tbsp homemade pumpkin puree (see below for how to make it)

200 ml (full fat) milk (or use a vegan milk variant)

0.5 tsp Pumpkin Spice herbs (see below which ones)

1-3 tsp sugar

1 tsp vanilla extract

Optional: Whipped cream

For the Pumpkin Spice mixture:

1 tsp ginger

1 clove

1 tsp allspice

1 tsp cinnamon

1 tsp speculaas spices*

Pinch of nutmeg

Step 1: Make pumpkin puree

Before you can start making your own Pumpkin Spice, you need to make your own pumpkin puree.

Start by preheating the oven to 200˚C. Cut the pumpkin into roughly equal pieces. Are you using a whole pumpkin? Then don't forget to peel the pumpkin and remove the seeds first. Bake the pumpkin pieces in the preheated oven for about 25-30 minutes. This way the pieces will be cooked properly.

Prefer not to use an oven? It is also possible to boil the pumpkin pieces. Boil the pumpkin pieces for 12-15 minutes. However, roasting the pumpkin in the oven gives it more flavor.

Once the pumpkin is soft enough you can start pureeing. You can do this with a hand blender or a fork. The puree can be stored in the fridge for about 3 days.

Tip: Freeze the pumpkin puree in an ice cube tray. That way you'll always have an easy supply of pumpkin puree on hand for your next cup of Pumpkin Spice Latte.

Step 2: Make the Pumpkin Spice Mixture

In addition to the pumpkin puree, you will also need to make your own spice mix. In most stores, it is not possible to find Pumpkin Spice spices. Fortunately, this is just as easy as the pumpkin puree. Make a mix of cinnamon, ginger, cloves and allspice. Add a pinch of nutmeg to this mixture and mix it. For one cup of Pumpkin Spice Latte, you only need 0.5 teaspoon. This mixture is enough for about 4 cups. It is also possible to make a large quantity at once. You can then store it in a glass jar for the next time.

*If you don't have cloves, nutmeg, allspice or ginger in the house. That's no problem. You can also mix 1 teaspoon of cinnamon with 1 teaspoon of speculaas spices. That's a lot easier to find in the supermarket.

Step 3: heat the milk with the puree, sugar and spices

Heat the milk in a saucepan. The Pumpkin Spice Latte is best with full-fat milk. You can use any type of milk you like to drink: think of soy milk or almond milk.

Immediately add the pumpkin puree, sugar and Pumpkin Spice. The amount of sugar depends on your preference. The more sugar, the sweeter the drink. Bring the mixture to a boil. Don't forget to stir everything well. Let the mixture boil for 5 minutes.

Step 4: Add espresso and vanilla extract

Remove the pan from the heat and add the espresso and vanilla extract. Stir this well again and pour it into a large mug. Don't want a piece of pumpkin in your mug? Pour your drink through a sieve into your mug.

Step 5: the topping

Finish your Pumpkin Spice Latte with whipped cream and cinnamon.

Enjoy it!
