Everything you need to know about Black Friday

It's here: Black Friday is just around the corner! You've probably already seen the term, maybe you're hearing it for the first time. Either way: Black Friday is becoming increasingly popular in the Netherlands. Do you know the origin and history of this day? That's a fun story. High time to take a closer look at Black Friday. KoffiePiraat explains what Black Friday exactly entails.

What is Black Friday

Black Friday is not just any Friday, it is the day after the American Thanksgiving. In America, Thanksgiving is celebrated every year on the fourth Thursday of November. Thanksgiving is all about gratitude and during this family celebration, Americans reflect on the past year and express their gratitude.

Doing Christmas shopping

However, as soon as Thanksgiving is over, there is of course another holiday just around the corner, namely Christmas. Many people started their Christmas shopping the day after Thanksgiving and this became so popular that many stores started offering extraordinary discounts to attract more people. Now Black Friday is known for these discounts and all of America goes to the shopping streets and malls to score the best deals. Everything is bought: from televisions to coffee, on Black Friday you can make your move!

Where does the term Black Friday come from?

The term Black Friday was first used in Philadelphia in the 1960s. Not by shoppers, but by the police! Officers could never take this day off and, due to the crowds on the streets and roads, worked such long hours that they started calling it Black Friday. Despite the negative feelings of store owners, it stuck and became a national term in the late 1980s.

However, because the origin of the word was still too negative, the store owners tied a different story to it. Black Friday now stands for the day of the year where stores no longer make a loss (and therefore do not end a day in the 'red') but actually make a profit and end a day in the black!

Cyber Monday

In addition to Black Friday, there is now also Cyber Monday. Cyber Monday is the Monday after Black Friday when all online stores offer big discounts on their assortment. They do this to hopefully make Black Friday a little less busy.
