KoffiePiraat tells: the advantage of ESE servings
You've probably seen it before: ESE or ESE-servings. But what exactly is this and why is it so popular? KoffiePiraat tells you:
Perfect coffee within reach
The abbreviation ESE stands for Easy Serving Espresso. It is a collaboration between coffee roasters and espresso machine manufacturers with the aim of making the perfect espresso. The system works on the basis of espresso pads. These pads are also called servings, pods or cialdes. An ESE serving consists of a pad with exactly 7 grams of coffee that has always gone through the coffee grinder in the same way. The coffee is compressed with the right force between two biodegradable layers of filter paper. This combination ensures the perfect coffee with a good crema layer and the right flow time. This way all the good flavours end up in your coffee. ESE pads must always meet these requirements. Strict rules have been drawn up for manufacturers and coffee roasters
To be a jack of all trades
The system was originally developed by illy . The original packets had a square filter, but this turned out to be very inconvenient. At the moment, the ESE servings of all manufacturers have a round filter with a 'tool'. This is a flap that makes it easier to remove the servings after use. Thanks to ESE, there is now a standard way of making coffee that many manufacturers have worked on as quickly as possible. And that is handy: all coffee machines work with the same system and it is super easy for the consumer. Nevertheless, not everyone participates in the ESE system. For example, Lavazza has its own machine - the Espresso point - that uses specially made plastic capsules. However, Lavazza does make ESE servings for other devices. Just like Lavazza, Nespresso also uses its own capsules for its own machines.

Easy for everyone
In addition to the perfect cup of espresso, ESE has a number of other advantages in terms of ease of use. Firstly, you don't have to grind the coffee beans yourself and then estimate the correct amount. In addition, you have no waste or mess after making an ESE drink and customers have a minimum of maintenance on the device. This is great for the environment, the customer and the manufacturer.
It is possible to use all ESE pads in a coffee machine that supports this. In every machine from illy, for example, pads from other manufacturers can also be used. How convenient is that!?
