What you learn as a youngster is what you do when you're older

The story of Caffé Mauro begins with Demetrio Mauro. Since he was 10 years old, Demetrio worked on a ship and dreamed of his own company. 15 years later (in 1930) the time had finally come, Demetrio bought his own ship called Salvatore Padre. He moved to Africa to start his own travel agency in the Italian colonies. However, Mr. Mauro lost his company during the Second World War and had to start over.

This new adventure became coffee roasting. In 1946 he started his own company in Milan but soon he wanted to return to his birthplace Calabria. In 1949 he started Caffé Mauro with a small roastery and a capacity of 20kg. Caffé Mauro was a success but there was not enough space to really grow. This is the reason that he left in 1958 to a new factory and with success. Within two years he had to expand. Today the factory of Caffé Mauro is the largest production factory in Europe in the field of coffee.

World coffee

Demetrio's passion for travel is also reflected in the coffee of Caffé Mauro. The company makes high-quality blends of coffee beans from Brazil, Africa, Central America and Asia. This diversity can also be tasted in the coffee of Caffé Mauro.

Caffé Mauro is very focused on the quality of the coffee and the process. This is also reflected in the various quality certificates that the company has received. For example, Caffé Mauro received the IFS International and the BRC certificate in 2012. These are the highest certificates in the European market in the field of coffee. The ultimate goal is not for nothing excellence on all fronts.

Staying big is hard work

Since 1997, the entire production of Caffé Mauro has been located in Villa San Giovanni, just outside Calabria. The factory has a surface area of 35,000 m2 and is considered one of the most modern production facilities in Europe. However, there is a lot involved. For example, a team of experts tastes around 10,000 cups of coffee per year, purely to test the quality of the green coffee beans. And this is just the beginning of the process.

During various stages, the faulty and imperfect coffee beans are removed from the process. Caffé Mauro accepts nothing less than perfection. The beans are roasted very slowly and cooled to about 20% of their original weight. The coffee is stored for a certain time and then ground. This slow process of roasting is the secret ingredient of Caffé Mauro. Each batch is also analysed afterwards and packed in special packaging. This is how Caffé Mauro stays at the top!
