Lorna Wilson is a personal trainer and is involved in one-on-one fitness sessions with her clients. She provides strength training, but also (live) classes, such as boot camp. In addition to being a personal trainer, she is also a biomechanics coach. In this blog, we get to know her a little better and she gives our Koffie Piraat blog readers tips on how to get and stay fit.

Career


About 12 years ago Lorna made the transition from the corporate world to personal trainer. After moving to the Netherlands, she worked for a few months as an IT 'er, but at a certain point felt the need to go in a different direction. Her interest in running grew and she took part in triathlons. This was also the beginning that she started to seriously think about personal training. Lorna left for the United Kingdom for three (3) months and followed a very intensive training there, came back and started working.

Trainings

Before Covid-19 times, the trainings were provided outside, but now they are online. It is planned to move some of the trainings back to the outside air and to continue to provide some online. The online classes ensure that people from all over the world can participate.

Biomechanics coach


Our bodies are made for movement. Instinctively, humans are hunters and gatherers, but we increasingly sit still. As a biomechanics coach, she looks at how people move, what limitations the body has created and how these can be reduced. She ensures that people feel less stiff and less tight and that there is less chance of injuries. If the person is very athletic, the biomechanics coach can contribute to the athlete's performance. This is one of the specialties she possesses.

Lorna sets herself apart from other personal trainers because she doesn't look for quick fixes. Lorna will never sell or promote her product by guaranteeing people that they will lose a certain amount of weight in a certain amount of time. She believes in doing the work and not making promises.

Lorna works with clients who suffer from arteritis, but also with clients who are still suffering from old injuries. Her client base also consists of people who have recently had an injury, who want to become fitter and take better care of themselves. The age of the clients is mainly between 40 and 50 years old.

Lorna says that as a tea lover, she would like to have a cup of tea with Stacey Sims, author and known for the
book ROAR. Stacey specializes in fitness for women. She has an interesting TED talk about how research in sports and fitness is mostly done on men and therefore there is a big lack of information about women.

Fitness Tips

  1. The quality of sleep. That can help in the recovery of a stressful life that people lead at the moment;
  2. Caffeine is a performance enhancer;
  3. Be realistic about what you can and cannot do and plan this well;
  4. 5 minute rule. On the days you don't want to work out, promise yourself that you'll work out for 5 minutes. If you still want to stop at the end of those 5 minutes, stop. But most people choose to keep going after they've already started.
  5. The support of other people. You don't have to do it alone.
